4. SICK PLANET SYNDROME
(CD1, Track 10, 3:13)

Reporter:
"Still ahead – Is oxygen thinning in the atmosphere?
We reveal what scientists have known for decades, and the potentially catastrophic consequences of ignoring their warnings."

Scientist:
"Diatoms are tiny one-celled organisms that live in the surface layer of the oceans and other bodies of water. Through photosynthesis they consume carbon dioxide and produce up to two thirds of the oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere. Our research concludes that the number of diatoms in the North Atlantic Ocean is declining at an alarming rate as a result of toxins and other pollutants being dumped into it via the Hudson, Delaware and Potomac rivers. This is but one of many regions of the planet where this is happening. On a global scale, the destruction of diatoms combined with the destruction of the forests could result in serious ramifications for life on Earth as we know it."

See what we’ve done to our planet
See what we’ve done to our home

Well it looks as though it’s all coming true
All those predictions made in ‘72
Sick Planet Syndrome, they gave it a name
We let it happen, we all share the blame

I see the ever present purple haze
Around our cities on the warm summer days
Greenhouse gasses pumped into the sky
By any measure the count is too high

See what we’ve done to our planet
See what we’ve done to our home

Contamination of the atmosphere
Increasing steadily with each passing year
Holes in the ozone and more acid rain
Same consequences again and again

And with oxygen deficiency
A man will tend to think irrationally
More acts of violence, an increase in crime
These are the symptoms, a sign of the times

See what we’ve done to our planet
See what we’ve done to our home
