About "Dreams of Flying"
It's a music project consisting of 26 songs written*, performed and recorded by Rene Young. This is a concept album that spans 2 CDs, with a total running time of over 135 minutes.
It was debuted on June 7, 2009 on the Dividing Line Broadcast Network. The podcast (in 160 kbps mp3 stereo) included a 76-minute "making of" feature, followed by the entire album. An archive of the podcast is available to stream or download. You will find it listed as "ProgRoots #330".
Dreams of Flying begins with an introductory song (Prelude: Ashes To Ashes) and then a lengthy instrumental overture sampling many phrases from the songs of the album. The overture begins with the beginning of time - the Big Bang, and continues through the pre-historic, volcanic period of a young planet Earth. It moves to the Earth's cooling period and the eventual emergence of life.
Following the overture, the story fast-forwards to our modern day world, when Man realizes that he has been slowly destroying his home planet since the beginning of the Industrial Age. The story follows one individual who becomes part of the crew that builds and maintains giant space colonies in orbit. The premise is that Man's ventures into space has resulted in the development of systems and technologies that can be used on Earth to address environmental concerns. For some, the answer lies in being one of the colonists of the giant orbiting habitats. Others remain on Earth, applying the newly-found green technology.
